The novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is a kind of hymn to California. Steinbeck structures geographical area on the basis of the dive. He combines narrative elements of the geographical space, the space of nature, and space of characters, which are made in the genre of epic novel; the author accompanies the movement of their characters by historical documentary sketches and multiple copyright digressions.
Tom Joad is the protagonist of the novel, the second son in the Joads family.
Just a few years before the crisis, Tom was jailed for the murder (during the fight he hit the opponent with a shovel). After serving his time, Tom came home and saw that his family is gone. Banks drove all the farmers from the land and his family (mother, father, uncle, brother, sister, grandma) decided to go to California to work.
Tom was a harsh and hard man. Together with his family he went to the South and experienced all the difficulties of a wandering life when you need to provide not only for yourself but also for women and children. They were looking for a job, received a pittance, which was enough only for a meager meal.
In the end, unable to endure such a life and a hostile attitude to the former farmers, Tom commits a crime and he has to run (Tom kills the man who has killed his friend, a preacher of Casey, who was one of the organizers of the strikes).
His family, despite the best efforts of his mother, gradually disintegrates. His elder brother, Noah, leaves the family, considering himself a burden (he is a bit strange due to injury at birth), his sister’s husband runs away and she gives birth to a stillborn child, his grandmother dies, and his younger brother of Tom, who is 10, gets sick from malnutrition.
Tom decides to fight with the government and raise the workers to fight against the authorities.
In general, a family’s prospects are very regrettable, despite the fact that they are hard-working, honest, and nice people.
Grapes of wrath – Tom Joad, Ma Joad, and Casey – seek to provide not only a decent living, but also to make their lives and the lives of their loved ones meaningful and spiritually rich.
It should be noted that the spiritual maturing of people in the novel is difficult and slow, but the reader is confident that this process cannot be stopped. Attitude to the ground as a nurse, and not as a storehouse of material treasures have the fundamental difference between people of the 20th century and settlers of the 19th century.
Civic growth of the people, unity of the people and sympathy to neighbor is something that can change the existing order of life in America.
