An Evil Revenge in The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe

The Cask of Amontillado is one of the best short stories of Edgar Poe.

The first-person narrator named Montresor announces that someone named Fortunato has injured him for many times and has recently insulted him. Montresor wants revenge upon Fortunato. The rest of the story is about Montresor using methods of entrapping Fortunato and fulfilling his desire for revenge. Montresor has never even let Fortunato know about his feeling. One evening during carnival time, Montresor decides to set his mad and fiendish plan into motion being sure that he would never be discovered.

Fortunato thought of himself as of a great expert of fine wines, especially loving a sherry Amontillado. Montresor used this to flatter him by asking his opinion on a newly bought cask of Amontillado. He tempts Fortunato with the rare liquor, even pretending being worried for Fortunato's health telling him that it is dampness and "nitre" in vaults with the wine. Fortunato insists on being taken to Montresor's home. Montresor gives all of the servants off for the night. He does not want to make Fortunato suspicions and tells him that everyone is out for the carnival. Montresor also wants to make sure that no one will be the witness of what he is going to do. It seems like Montresor has been planning his revenge for a long time.

As two men passed deeper into the vaults, the nitre made Fortunato constantly cough, but he wanted to continue. Soon, Montresor stopped and offered Fortunato a bottle of Medoc wine to warm up. This seems to be a kind act, but as the story progresses it becomes clear that this act of kindness was just performed to keep the victim alive long enough to bury him alive.

Fortunato says a toast for Montresor's buried ancestors, and Montresor wishes him "long life." Fortunato suddenly notices that the vaults are extensive, and Montresor replies that the Montresors is a large family.

As the two men go further into the tunnels, the nitre fumes and the cold increase. Fortunato asks for another drink and Montresor gives him a bottle of De Grave.

Fortunato discovers that there are lots of catacombs of long deceased relatives. Montresor says that Amontillado is inside one of the small crypts and Fortunato steps inside.

Montresor quickly locks Fortunato to the wall with a chain. The man is too drunk to realize what is going on. Montresor starts building a wall to bury his enemy alive. Although Fortunato tries to convince him to stop, Montresor gets his revenge by leaving poor Fortunato to die in such a horrible way.
