Explanation of Contextualized Symbols Using Social Interactionism

Symbolic interactionism is one of the leading paradigms in sociology, which aims to understand the behavior of people, and the behavior is perceived the way people themselves understand it. Proponents of this theory believe that each individual has their own interpretation of their actions in any act of relationships.

In a similar way, people, with whom the individual is constantly communicating, develop their own interpretations of the person’s words and behavior. Therefore, we must first understand what people’s actions mean for themselves, if they are included in the communication with others.

From the point of view of representatives of symbolic interactionism, any patterns of behavior, attitudes, beliefs, and values should be considered in context in order to understand life and activities of social groups. Without context we cannot understand the actions and behavior of a particular person or social group.

According to representatives of symbolic interactionism, the observer, who seeks to explain the actions or behavior of a particular social group, can make a mistake, because he or she studies only the outer side of the behavior of the members of the group or the action of the group as a whole.

The basic idea of the methodology of individualism is that society and its functioning can be explained only by a set of individual actions through interaction.

One of the most famous representatives of symbolic interactionism Herbert Blumer identifies the following key points: people belong to different social facilities, primarily in terms of the value they give to them, and not from the standpoint of internal properties, which these objects have.

The founder of the concept of symbolic interactionism was George Herbert Mead said that symbols are gestures that can be insignificant and significant.

  • Insignificant gestures are gestures that may cause reactions, in which there is practically no idea. In other words, the actions of one person can stimulate unconscious actions of the other.
  • Significant gestures are above all sound gestures, especially specific words of the language. These gestures contribute to the development of human society, as they lead to meaningful interaction.

According to Mead, a significant symbol is a gesture inherent to man. They can cause quite certain and predictable reaction from those to whom they address.
