The Argument Against Downsizing in Big Business

According to the world practice, the globalisation causes external conditions that force the business to enlarge the capital for more effective use and further development.

The consequences of the merger and acquisitions are mainly positive and advantageous for the company. Among them are cost savings in manufacturing, reducing the expenses on of transportation, management, marketing and advertising, improving the equipment efficiency, obtaining additional distribution channels, along with new customers and so on. In general, it is good for business; however, there is still a problem of downsizing.

The possibility to become unemployed does not please anyone, but an ordinary worker is unauthorized to make decisions on business consolidation, and therefore, cannot affect the process of downsizing. Perhaps, the solution to this problem should be sought only in the laws that can protect the rights of employees.

Despite the fact that people are forewarned of dismissal and are usually allowed to work in the enterprise for some time till they find a new job, for many, the dismissal becomes a disaster. There are some examples when even the world famous companies in the merger have dismissed employees in the mass. It is still the fact that in most situations people lose their jobs. Moreover, the arguments like humanist attitude and human rights are virtually powerless.

The only thing that a company can do for the employees is to provide them with good recommendations or implement the targeted employment policy to other businesses. In addition, people need to know what categories have the right of priority to be retained in the course of company’s reorganisation. Typically, the right to avoid downsizing have married workers with two or more children, disabled people, war veterans, people who have a good track record and are constantly improving their skills.

Still, there is a strong hope for new anti-downsizing laws that will give greater warranties to employees or require firms care more about the preservation of the personnel. In my opinion, everything depends on the company and on how it values the employees and cares about their future. However, one should admit that such companies are more an exception than the rule. Therefore, to avoid painful layoffs, the employee must be prepared for the fact that somehow he will have to find a new job.
