The Description of Hair Styles among Romans

For students, writing about hair and different hair styles can be a bit hard because there is always a point where they need to use both their inspiration and bold facts. When describing Roman hair styles for both women and men, the first thing to mention is that Romans were very conscious of their appearance. For Roman men, their status was reflected by their hair styles. For Roman women, their styles and fashions were a bit simple and unchanged because they didn’t wear any special clothes to distinguish their status. Wealthy people wore very elaborate hair styles in addition to wigs at that time.

When studying popular Roman hair styles for men, you should describe their changes over time. At the very beginning, they wore long hair, but when barbers were introduced, they started wearing short haircuts. They also like wearing full heads of hair, and there was a tendency for other men to copy the style offered by noble and wealthy men. For instance, Nero offers some elaborate hair styles with curls that framed his face, and many men started wearing the same haircuts. He also introduced the other fashion in hair, and it was about wearing side burns.

Hadrian was the first emperor who decided to have a short beard, and this hair style became very widespread among other Roman men fast. Constantine was the emperor who wore false hair of different colors that was perfumed and carefully arranged. Many rich Roman men followed this trend and started to dye their hair in both light and dark shades while wearing wigs was still a fashionable trend too.

Originally, Roman women chose to dress their hair in simple manners, and one of the easiest hair styles that they liked is allowing their locks to fall down in tresses. Another great trend was platting their hair and fastening it with a big pin. Young women tend to wear long hair styled as simple and tied buns or they just wore top knots. Simple hair styles for married Roman women altered later when Augustus introduced a variety of elaborate and interesting hair styles for them.

The ruling of Flavian emperors resulted in raising hair styles to a decent height by the rows of false hair, and this fashion was described by many writers, including Juvenal. This hair fashion made women appear taller than they were in reality, and their hair became curled and arranged in many layers. Their favorite hair styles included being curled, waves, and twisted.
