The movies stars Al Pacino as well as Russell Crowe, with supporting performers Bruce McGill, Christopher Plummer, Michael Gambon and Diane Venora.

A fictionalized account of a true story is based on the 60 Minutes segment about Jeffrey Wigand. It’s a whistleblower in the tobacco industry. They both defend his testimony against efforts for the purpose discrediting and suppressing this stuff by CBS as well as Wigand's former employer.

Though with a moderate box office success, The movie received overwhelmingly positive reviews, especially with focus on Crowe's portrayal of Wigand as well as Mann's direction. The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards, highly praised for est Picture and Best Actor in a leading role.

Critical response

As mentioned above, notwithstanding the disappointing box office reception, the movie boasted near-unanimous critical praise, collecting some of the best reviews of 1999. It boasts a 96% rating at Rotten Tomatoes built around on 132 reviews as well as an 84% rating on Metacritic. Additionally, Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times provided the movie with three and half out of four stars and also praised its amazing power to entertain, absorb and even anger.

As Newsweek magazine's David Ansen revealed, Mann could probably make a film about needlepoint riveting. Utilizing a big canvas, a great cast of superb character performers as well as his exquisite eye for composition, he has created the kind of current-events epic, which Hollywood has mostly abandoned to TV and currently shows us how films can do it better.

Janet Maslin praised Russell Crowe in her review for The New York Times as a subtle powerhouse in his wrenching evocation of Wigand. Aside from that, Time magazine's Richard Corliss stressed that when Crowe got to command the screen, The Insider came to roiled life. Meanwhile, Menin, playing Deep Throat in X-Files told that the Insider managed to spill the truth. Finally, Rolling Stone magazine's Peter Traverswrote wrote that with its strafing wit as well as dramatic provocation, dynamite performances The Insider offers Mann at his best— unsanitized, blood up and unbowed.
