All we know about such legendary poems as “Beowulf” and “The Iliad” which was written by Homer. There are two heroes one in the every poem. Beowulf is from the self-titled epic poem and Achilles is from “The Iliad”. The plots and characteristics of these two poems meet all the requirements to be called epic ones. As for the heroic actions, they are determined as the fate of groups of people or nations in the both these poems. In fact, the heroic actions have the values of the age. That is why the main plot of both poems is that the main hero interacts with unusual events or supernatural beings. Even in spite of the fact that “The Iliad” was written few centuries before than “Beowulf”, there are lot of similar features in the actions, fate and heroes. One of the similarities is also the popularity of these two poems which are reed during the centuries. They become the brightest example of the ancient literature which concern to the classic one.
As we understand the actions of the main heroes often determine the fate of the other people or even the whole nation in the epic poems “Beowulf” and “The Iliad”. The devilish Grendel’s acts had to be stopped to save the people of Denmark in “Beowulf”. Reading Homer’s epic poem we can notice the similarity with the other poem we analyzing. In “The Iliad” Hector and Achilles battle left the Trojan prince to be lifeless.
Heroic deeds and action have the reflection of the values of the age in the both epic poems which we take into account. The main character from “Beowulf” must be fearless because of not backing down from anything. There is even the scene in the poem, when the main hero is in the water. The waves are so big, and the hero has enough power and strengthens to get to the bottom. Considering the Homer’s epic poem “The Iliad”, we see that people of that time believed in the venerating the body after the any person has passed. This mind is too similar to those intentions which are represented in the epic poem “Beowulf”.
In the both epic poems which we analyze there is the hero’s interaction with the unusual and non-standard events or supernatural beings. In both “Beowulf” and “The Iliad” there are some situations when main characters have to deal with the strangers, events and unusual creatures which they haven’t seen before. All these features noticed above prove that these both epic poems are so similar, but at the same time they are written by the different authors and even in the different centuries.
