Immigrants Came to America for a Variety of Reasons

The reasons why immigrants came to the United States are various. They were mostly in pursuit of personal, religious or economic freedom. The most important reason for immigration was extreme financial need. People fled from their native countries, where they were unemployed or had bad living, to come to America and try to build a better life for their families and themselves.

In terms of economic reasons, many immigrants wanted to become landowners, and they could not do it in their countries. It could be hard to do it in Europe because one had to be born in a wealthy family to be able to inherit the land. The New World suggested a solution to this problem. In many cases, governments granted land to anyone who had a desire to farm and work on the land. The United Kingdom offered the colonists to produce goods and ship them back home, and the brave ones who wanted to take a chance on emigration or indentured servitude could become very rich.

Religious freedom was also a serious motivator for immigration. Lengthy religious conflicts, like the one between Protestantism and Catholicism, led to wars and despotism in some European countries, and new colonies promised the faithful a new start. Besides, the people with conservative beliefs, for example the Puritans, used the colonies as a way to start a new home where they live to the best of their knowledge and understanding.

Generally, the immigration to the United States is divided into four periods: the colonial one, the middle of the 19th century, the beginning of the 20th century and the years after 1965. Each period brought a different group of immigrants to America and all of them had their own reason for immigrating.

At the time of the colonial period, immigrants came to the USA to escape religious or economic persecution and to try to establish a more free life for themselves. However, the Act of 1790 restrained the entry to "free white persons".

In the middle of the 19th century immigrants entered the USA mainly from Northern Europe, and they came as indentured servants. In the early years of the 20th century, the most massive flow of immigrants came from Southern and Eastern Europe to flee from famine and war.

The newest period of immigration was in the years after 1965. The immigrants who came to the country at that period were predominantly of Hispanic and Asian origin. Recently the USA was filled by the immigrants from Mexico who fled from violence and poverty.
