Life and Works of Michelangelo Buonarroti

Michelangelo is the first western artist, whose biography was written and published when he is alive. Great sculptor, architect, and painter was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy. He was the second of five sons of his parents. At the age of six, he was sent to a Florence grammar school. Nevertheless, Michelangelo was more interested in drawing than in schooling. When Michelangelo was 13, his father realized that his son wasn’t interested in family business. So he agreed to send him to the famous painter Ghirlandaio. There, Michelangelo learned the technique of fresco. After a year spent at the workshop, he moved into the palace of the powerful Medici family, to study classical sculpture. This was a fantastic time for Michelangelo. He was taught by famous sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni. In addition, he met a lot of poets, living artists, philosophers, and writers of those time. After the death of Lorenzo de Medici, Michelangelo ran to Bologna, where he continued his work as a sculptor. Michelangelo was involved in a story to pass off one of his sculptures as an ancient work. Cardinal Riario of San Giorgio bought the ‘Cupid’ statue, but when he realized that he was cheated he demanded to return his money back. However, in the end, he was so impressed with Michelangelo’s work, that he didn’t want his money back and even invited Michelangelo to Rome. In Rome Michelangelo created a lot of fantastic sculptures including Pieta. He arrived in Rome in 1496 when he was 21 years old. Michelangelo in his early twenties sculpted Pieta. It is a sculpture of Mary that holds the dead Jesus across her lap. Now it is in St. Peters in the Vatican and is considered one of his greatest works. In 1504, he returned to Florence and completed his most famous sculpture, David. His strength, humanity and overall courage made the "David" a symbol of Florence and Florentine freedom. In 1505 he was called to Rome to work on a Tomb for Pope Julius II, but unfortunately, this work wasn’t finished to his satisfaction. However, he finished his masterpiece -the fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which took him four years to finish. This work is a fantastic example of High Renaissance art and is a real masterpiece. Michelangelo died on February 18, 1564, at his home in Rome. Michelangelo was famous and wealthy during his life. He is a symbol of the Italian Renaissance.
