The Life and Leadership of Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela, one of the most recognizable symbols of the human rights movement in the XX century, is a man whose devotion to the cause of freedom of his people inspires human rights defenders around the world.

He was born in Transkei (South Africa). His father was the leader of the tribe. Mandela finished university and got a degree as a lawyer. In 1944 he became a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and began to work actively in order to put an end to the apartheid policy, which conducted the ruling National Party. On the court, where Mandela was judged for his work, he said that he had fought against white supremacy and against black supremacy. His ideal was a democratic and free society in which all people can live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. For the sake of this ideal he hoped to live and embody it. But if it was needed for the sake of ideal, I was ready to die.

Mandela, sentenced to the life sentence, became a bright symbol of resistance for the gaining strength of the movement against apartheid. He has always refused to surrender their political positions in exchange for freedom. Eventually, in February 1990, released from prison, he was still taking up the struggle against oppression more energetically, in order to achieve the goals that he and other people have set themselves nearly four decades ago.

The whole world shook Mandela in his old age. His star lit up on February 11, 1990, the day when he got out of prison. Long before that, in 1943, Nelson Mandela took part in a protest in Johannesburg for the first time. By this time he managed to get a degree in the only university where blacks have been taken in. Before that he ran away from home, in order not to marry for the parent agreement.

44th year becomes a turning point in the fate of Mandela. First of all he took part in the youth wing of the African National Congress, and then he participated in combat. Beginning his fight for human rights and against the policy of apartheid, Mandela initially believed that it is possible to win using a non-violent method of treatment. But after the shooting of a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, the language of diplomacy changed to a guerrilla war.

In May 1994, Mandela went inauguration as the first black president of South Africa. He held this post until 1999. During his presidency the country has moved away from the board and the minority apartheid, he gained respect worldwide for his work on reconciliation within the country and internationally.
