The Similarities of the Themes of Henrik Ibsen Plays

Henrik Ibsen is a famous writer who introduced to readers a range of literary works, but most people recognize him for his prominent plays. There are many similarities when it comes to the themes discussed in his plays. For instance, if to consider Wild Ducks, Ghosts, and other plays, Ibsen included many similar themes and topics, and it becomes evident to the audience at once. One of the main themes that are constant in all of these plays is the opposing values of the reality and ideals.

When reading An Enemy of the People, you’ll soon understand that it’s an interesting story about one doctor who discovered that his hometown is a cesspool. When he discovers a beloved bath that is supposed to help everyone get better and makes this town visited by many travelers, it becomes polluted with dangerous bacteria because of underground pipes. That’s why people start getting sick and infected, and the doctor does his best to explain to local people that they need to fix pipes to solve this problem. However, he has to face a lot of resistance from important people in the town, and that’s why this doctor becomes an enemy of all people and is out-casted of this beloved place. This is how Ibsen shows the idealism of the main character who is ready to do everything to achieve this goals. The main purpose of this popular play is showing the content toward the society in knowing the truth. The author shows readers the reality of things built on lies and the necessity of becoming more scientific instead of being religious-wise. This literary piece is a great example of the society in Europe of that time when inhabitants were not interested in technology and similar matters.

Peer Gynt is another famous play written by Ibsen and it tells the audience the story of a young and lazy man who keeps breaking rules and existing moral codes. This character ruins a local wedding by stealing a bride who is later abandoned by him. He also decides to marry an elf princess to abandon her later. Gynt does other similar things and commits such crimes as pushing a sailor overboard just to save himself. He also peddles idols and hates the Bible, so he lives just like a wild, but then he meets a monster. In general, this story may sound a bit strange to most readers, but there are many interesting themes offered by Ibsen who wants to show that women are often misused by evil and careless men.
