The El Nino Effects on Sea Lions

Hundreds of unhealthy and starving young sea lions come to the coast of California, as it was written in numerous media. Since January 2015 employees of rescue centers and volunteers have found about 1650 most marine cubs on the beaches, in public toilets, for buildings and railway routes.

Leaving their own mothers, young sea lions come to the coast every spring, but this year the number of stray children is five times more than in 2013.

Scientists assume that the crisis of the California sea lion population is associated with exposure to weather paradox of El Niño, which causes warming of water in breeding sites of this species of pinnipeds, especially in the Channel Islands along the coast of Southern California. The climate phenomenon El Niño is characterized by a significant warming of water surface in the eastern Pacific Ocean. At the end of 2015 it was marked water warming more than for two degrees of Celsius compared with the average. Thus, the current phenomenon of El Niño was among the "most powerful since 1950". Similar phenomena were observed only in 1982-83 and in 1997-98.

Warm water is forcing the main meal of sea lions - squid, sardines and anchovies - to change their place of residence on more northern locations. For this reason, females are forced to leave their own young ones up to 8 days and float away in search of food. From sadness and hunger young sea lions are excommunicated from their mothers and sent to an independent voyage, despite the inability to hunt and underweight.

Normally, sea lions begin to appear in great numbers on the coast in April or May, but this year the rescue centers have begun to take the first sea lion cubs that were emaciated hungry already in December. Each incoming baby is ponded, measured its temperature and blood sugar levels. Based on the inspection and test results rescue centers staff make a decision whether it is possible to save the animal or not. Those who passed the selection, fed from a bottle by gruel of chopped herring, a mixture of vitamins and milk 3 or 4 times a day. Cubs of sea lions, which are able to eat fish, jokingly referred to as "consumers", and those who can fight for a fish are thrown into the pool and called "fighters".

The purpose of rescue centers is to return sea lions to an adequate state for independent living in the wild nature. Staff at the centers makes a point that after all animals will be sent in the same unfavorable conditions. In this connection the question about the future of their survival arises strongly.
