Aristophanes the Comic Writer

Aristophanes is an Ancient Greek playwright, who is called the father of comedy.

Aristophanes staged his first comedy in 427, but under a false name. When a year later he ridiculed the powerful demagogue Cleon in his work Babylonians, calling him the tanner, Cleon accused him before the council that he in the presence of representatives of the Allied Powers reproached and ridiculed Athens’ policy. Later Cleon accused him of misappropriating the title of the Athenian citizen.

Aristophanes revenged Cleon by brutally attacking him in the comedy Riders. The impact of this demagogue was so great that no one agreed to make a mask for the actor resembling Cleon, and his character was so repulsive that this role had to be played by Aristophanes himself.

We only know 11 of 44 comedies written by Aristophanes. All these comedies undoubtedly belong to the best works of ancient stage. But in order to understand them, you need to be intimately familiar with the life and events of that time. Only such a reader will be able to adequately assess the witty allusions, subtle sarcasm, skill, and depth of their conception. His wit and playfulness are as endless, as his courage. The Greeks were fascinated by the beauty and charm of his plays.

In his political and moral convictions Aristophanes was an adherent of old times and a stern defender of old beliefs, customs, science and art. Freedom of the ancient comedy gave a wide scope of personal satire, and the courage and imagination of Aristophanes made such an unlimited use of this freedom that he did not stop at nothing, if the subject deserved to be ridiculed.

He did not even spare the Athenian demos, boldly blaming them in cowardice, frivolity, foolish credulity, forcing them to forever cherish and always be disappointed.

Dramatic works of Aristophanes are the true reflection of the inner life of Attica at the time. In the first period of his activity Aristophanes mainly depicted the social life and its representatives, while in his later comedies politics recedes into the background.

At the end of his life he staged a play Kokalos, in which a young man seduces the girl, but then marries her, after knowing about her origin. This play marked the beginning of a new comedy. As in everything else, Aristophanes was a master in versification; a special kind of anapest is named after him (catalectic tetrameter, metrum Aristophanium). This verse is used in a passionate and excited speech.
