The Value of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell

Bertrand Russell was British philosopher, social activist, and mathematician. Russell is known for his work in defense of pacifism, atheism, and liberal and left-wing political movements and has made an invaluable contribution to mathematical logic, history of philosophy, and theory of knowledge. His works on aesthetics, pedagogy, and sociology are less known. Russell is considered one of the founders of the English neo-realism and logical positivism.

In 1950, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Philosophy, according to Russell, takes a no-man’s area between science and theology, trying to give answers to the questions that meet the requirements of science, in which theology is powerless. Although philosophy is not a science, it still represents a certain spiritual power that has a significant impact on society and its history. Russell recognizes the interrelation of philosophy and political and social conditions of the society development. The history of philosophy, according to Russell, is the history of original concepts of outstanding creative individuals whose own systems have a significant impact on public life. The most fruitful traditions in the history of philosophy, according to Russell, are secularism and the desire to put the epistemological study on the ground of logic. Russell’s Books Problems of Philosophy and History of Western Philosophy are still considered the best introduction to philosophy in many countries.

Russell has passed a complicated evolution of views, which he defined as the passage from Plato’s interpretation of Pythagoreanism to Hume. After a brief enthusiasm with Hegelianism in his English version, Russell went on to Plato embodiment of absolute idealism and then under the influence of Moore, Meinong, and Whitehead – to neo-realism. Russell was one of the founders of the concept of logical atomism, which explains the need to transfer the logical structure of language to reality and the creation of the ontological doctrine that would correspond to this structure.

In 1940s-1950s, Russell refers to the ideas of Hume. Russell admits the existence of facts, which, in contrast to the experience, are objective, but objectivity is based only on the belief in the existence of the external world.

Russell’s theory of knowledge is largely an attempt to combine two different principles – the principle of empiricism, according to which all our knowledge comes from experience, and the principle of conviction, which is traditionally considered rationalistic.
