Understanding Schizophrenia, A Psychopathological Disorder

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disease that makes patients to interpret the reality in abnormal ways. It may lead to such severe symptoms as delusions, hallucinations, disorders thoughts and behaviors, and other that impair normal everyday functions, and turn them into disabled. Unfortunately, this condition is chronic and it requires a lifelong treatment plan. This mental condition is characterized by a set of problems with cognition, emotions, and behaviors.

The signs of schizophrenia may vary from one patient to another, but this disease usually involves their disorganized speech, delusions, and impaired abilities to function normally. Delusions are people’s false beliefs that aren’t based on the reality. For instance, patients who have this mental condition may think that they are offended or harmed by others or they have some exceptional abilities, and other false ideas.

Hallucinations are also common, and they often involve heating and seeing something that doesn’t exist. For people with schizophrenia, they have a great impact because they are accepted as their normal life experiences. Hallucinations may affect any of their senses, but most patients claim that they have some voices regularly. Disorganized thinking is another common symptom of schizophrenia, so patients’ efficient communication is impaired, and their answers to basic questions become unrelated. Sometimes, they put meaningless words together that can’t be understood by others.

They also have abnormal and disorganized motor behaviors, and this symptom is evident in many ways, including their unpredictable agitation. Their abnormal behaviors may include bizarre and inappropriate postures, resistance to instructions, excessive and useless movements, etc. Other negative symptoms of this serious mental condition include the lack of people’s ability to function properly. They start neglecting their personal hygiene, lacking emotions, losing interest in daily activities, and so on.

In male patients, schizophrenia starts when they are about 20 years old, and women usually develop this disease a bit later. There are different factors that cause its development, and many doctors believe that schizophrenia is caused by a combination of brain, environment, and genetic factors.
