Analysis on Holden's Transformation

Reality with the confrontations opens up the eyes of humans. Holden Caulfield is the protagonist of J. D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye”. He is a troubled adolescent. As the plot of the novel develops, the man confronts with conceit, death and his own romantic dreams. Readers can see the transformation from the self-absorbed young boy to a more open teenager. He is ready to become the one who is willing to face and deal with the reality of the world.

In fact, Holden is so sensitive and immature teenager who is not conscious and responsible for his own actions. He sees how Stradlater dates with Jane Gallagher and Holden became so jealousy and tries to explode. There are some episodes in the novel “The Catcher in the Rye” which demonstrate his overactive temper for the ridiculous reason. It is shown the immaturity of this teen who can’t determine what isn’t worth fighting and what is appropriate. Holden runs away from the school being expelled for flunking 4 of his classes. He demonstrates many childish actions, and running away from his own problems is one such action which hasn’t normal explanations. In spite of dealing with problems as the clever and serious man, Holden runs from them. But he understands that the results will be so unpleasant, and he will never be able to deal properly with the problems in future. But he just runs away and doesn’t want anything to change. He has lots of fears and doubts about the things and event which he hasn’t even confronted yet. The story progresses, and with the time Holden begins to understand his own personality and even the reasons of these fears.

While Holden reevaluates his own actions, he demonstrates the considerable changes of the more understandable and developed teenager. Reader meets the new Holden win the company of prostitute Sunny, who also considers Holden to be so uneasy. In this period of time Holden tries to grow up, but he can’t force upon himself. It is the big fight between tension of Holden and his fragile innocence and his growing aspects of the life. He desires to live in the peaceful and beautiful world. But the pressure of the demands and his emerging sexuality induce him to encounter and be in the company of such people as Sunny and Maurice. With the help of such methods author describes Holden as weak person, who was not power to develop his own personality and become the true individual with his own intentions, dreams, wishes and plans for the future.
