The First Use of Commercial Steamboats

In 1775, Jacques Perrier experienced the first ship with a steam engine on the river Seine in Paris.

Perrier's ideas led to the first successful steamboat in America in 1809. American Robert Fulton had admitted that the glory belongs to the author of the experiments carried out on the river Seine in 1775. Once the paddle steamers gained commercial success in the US, they quickly spread across Europe. A new way of water travel was considered much better than to shake on potholes in the coach. Steam engines became more efficient and powerful. First, low-speed steam engines perfectly suited to the wheels as propulsion. But paddle steamer had some limitations: the floodgates on the rivers are narrow, often wave rocked the ship and not all blades fell into the water.

Paddle wheels were not ideal propulsion for ships, but it was found a talented engineer who has the necessary expertise to find the best way to propel ships. John Erickson was a Swedish engineer who gained his profession in the army. Screw of Archimedes was known for a thousand years, and has only been used to supply water for irrigation. Erickson had the idea to use it for the movement of the vessel. He started looking for investors who would finance his ideas.

Not too long after receiving a patent engineer built a 50-meter ship, this was launched in 1837. He developed a speed of 10 knots. In August of that year, the ship went down the Thames with a barge in tow weight of 650 tons.

Soon, his ideas were used in the first steam frigate of America under the name «Princeton». This vehicle has the technical characteristics, confirming the genius Erickson. The steam engine was located well below the waterline, and was unavailable for enemy`s fire. Chimneys could be omitted so it was not interfering. And what is the most important in the development of technology of steam engines of Erickson that he managed to create a mechanism of smaller size, that were able to produce more power.

Erickson project has become a godsend for the US Navy, but soon something unexpected happened.

Commercial freight had already had a robust propulsion system, as the screw was installed below the waterline now. This construction helped to leave more rooms for people and cargo, and therefore it brought a good profit. When more efficient steam engines were developed, merchant ships could take on board enough fuel to go anywhere. It was a great achievement of engineering that helped the humanity to improve the conditions of travelling and transporting.
