Biography of Guglielmo Marconi

Guglielmo Marconi, the Italian physicist and inventor, was born in Bologna, Italy, on April 25th, 1874. He is famous for winning the Nobel Prize in Physics along with Karl Ferdinand Braun for their contribution into the development of wireless telegraphy.

Guglielmo was the second son of Giuseppe Marconi, a rich Italian landowner, and his wife, Annie Jameson, who was from Ireland. He studied privately in Bologna, Florence and Leghorn. Since his early years he was particularly interested in Physics and Electrical Science, and learnt from the works of James Clerk Maxwell and the research of Heinrich Hertz.

Scientific achievements and contributions:

Marconi contributed to the development of wireless radio signal system. He first set up radio signaling at his father’s house in 1895, and soon the area of signals coverage reached 1,5 miles.

In 1896 Mr. Marconi was given a patent for his device in England. Later that same year he became the owner of the first patent for wireless telegraphy system in the world. In July 1897 he founded the Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company Limited, and in 1990 this company was named after him.

1899 was a successful year for Marconi, because he was able to establish a wireless connection between Great Britain and France across the Channel. In 1900 Mr. Marconi became the owner of the patent for “tuned or systonic telegraphy.”

In 1901 Guglielmo Marconi proved the fact that the curves of the Earth surface did not affect wireless signals. The first signals were transmitted by him across the distance of 2100 miles, between Cornwall and New Foundland.

The following year he proved the impact of “daylight effect” on wireless connection, and he also received the patent for the magnetic detector which became a standard wireless receiver. December of that year was marked by the transmission of the first complete message from the stations in Nova Scotia and Massachusetts to Poldhu.

In the years 1905 and 1912 Mr. Marconi patented a “timed spark” system which generated continuous waves.

In 1914 Marconi became a Lieutenant in the Army of Italy. Later on, in 1916, he was promoted to be a Commander of the Navy and received an Italian Military Medal in 1919 for the war service. His scientific research and systems were used in the military. He proceeded with his work and established the original microwave radiotelephone link in 1932.

The life of Guglielmo Marconi ended on July 20th, 1937 due to the repeating heart attacks.
