The Necessity of Human Greed

It is believed that greed is one of natural human characteristics. It can also be considered “the engine of progress”, because if people did not want to improve their lives materialistically, there would be no driving force for capitalism and technological progress. There also would not be the need to produce so many consumer goods.

Thus, we can say that human greed is even a necessary feeling. People’s craving for more products and goods stimulates the development of science and production. Of course, consumption should not become the sense of life. It is a normal desire to make one’s life comfortable, however buying more and more clothes, cars and expensive electronics often makes no sense. Consumer psychology is influenced by advertisements and media. Due to these sources people develop the desire for things they would not have known about otherwise. Advertisement makes them feel like these things are necessary for them. This often makes people feel jealous of others, who possess the goods they do not own.

The positive side of greed can be the desire of constant progress in terms of personal development and education. Greediness for knowledge is a good thing which can lead one out of stagnation. Greed can be good in terms of achieving success and realizing the potential one has. For instance, getting higher education and a good job shows one’s desire for a better life and self-actualization. If a person was too modest or too lazy to pursue his or her dreams, he would not achieve much and would be satisfied with a low income and a low position in a society. So, this form of greed cannot be considered destructive, because it leads one to progress.

The societies built on everyone’s equality proved to be not viable and are very closed, such as all the societies which strived or still strive to reach communism. So, if the members of society satisfy their greed for private property and democratic rights, it will be beneficial for this society. The example of capitalistic society proves that. The idea of equality is good in theory, however the experience of nations shows that people are not equal and have never been that way. It is normal for them to have equal rights and opportunities, but all they achieve in life will be based on their personal qualities and attempts they make. Thus, if people become rich and successful, this can witness that they possess some form of greed which is necessary for them to achieve success.
