Gender Roles: From The Past To Nowadays
Gender roles determine how males and females should behave, speak, dress and communicate with other people in the society. Gender roles are always personal and cultural. There are two theories – Gender Theory and Social Role Theory. Gender theory believes that children learn to display their gender through particular behaviors and attitudes. Gender role theory posits that such factors as cultural norms, beliefs, values are very important and the impact of socialization is quite big. At the same time, social role theory posits that the social structure is the main force in distinguishing genders. The division of labor creates gender roles.
Indeed, learning plays an important role in process of shaping gender roles. There are a lot of factors that influence a child. For example, parents, teachers, peers, movies, television, music, books, and religion – all these factors reinforce gender roles throughout the lifespan. Obviously, parents have the biggest influence. Normally fathers teach boys how to repair and build things; mothers teach girls how to keep house and cook. Children normally continue using gender roles adopted in the childhood.
So, what are traditional gender roles? Traditional gender roles are something that we can see in old movies. The woman is at home and cooking dinner and the husband returns from work and kisses her. A child gets into the kitchen to ask mother when dinner will be finished. We can see that the man is the strong breadwinner of the family and at the same time woman takes care of the children and household duties. That wasn’t just happened on the screen it was the reality. Men had to care of the family financially and they also had responsibility for guiding the family. They could listen to their wives’ advice, but men always made the final decisions. Men did not do household duties and took care of the children. They needed to feel strong and they didn’t share their feelings a lot especially with the people outside the family.
Women did all the household duties and took care of children giving them everything they need. In addition, women are considered more emotional than men are.
However, these days things are a bit different. More women than men are enrolled in college, and women are expected to earn more graduate degrees than men. Women have become more independent. However, women are still expected to be the primary homemakers.
