The True Lies in Macbeth by Shakespeare

Macbeth is the shortest tragedy written by Shakespeare. It is about Macbeth, a brave Scottish general, who receives a prophecy from witches. They tell him that one day he will become King of Scotland. Being ambitious and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth finally decides to murder King Duncan and take the throne for himself.

There are lots of enigmas, including puzzles or contradictions. There are many equivocations in the play. The eluding effect is also enhanced by the presence of the supernatural. Some comments made by characters after analyzing certain situations often give the idea of illusion versus actuality. A prominent idea in Macbeth is the truth and reality opposing fantasy and fallacy.

Contradiction and duality are commonly mentioned in the play. For the first time, it is seen from the speech of the witches "Fair is foul." The Weird sisters also use this manner in their speech when they address Banquo telling him that he will be "Lesser than Macbeth and greater." It may seem perplexing at first sight, but, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that what they have said is true. Although Banquo does not become a king, he is still a better man than Macbeth. There are many "double" things in the fourth act. The witches wish Macbeth to experience double the pain, and he desires to be double sure about himself. Equivocation also presents through the drunken porter who plays a little game of the gates of hell. As the story develops, this eluding form of speech deserves punishment. By saying two opposite things together as truth, one cannot be sure about the truth of the statement.

Another confusing aspect of the play is the reality of the supernatural and impossible. The witches (real or illusion) had a great impact on the lives of the characters. They make Macbeth believe he is able to control his fate, and this is how they made him change his fate. The apparitions they use also influence Macbeth's state of mind and plans. Because the images contradict one another, Macbeth cannot understand which one of them is true.

Finally, Macbeth realizes he has misinterpreted the witches' words, but it is too late. Still known that he is doomed, he continues to fight. He is killed and beheaded by Macduff, which fulfilled the remaining prophecy.

The true lies in Macbeth took place, making people do actions that they would not do without them. Still, it is not only prophecy’s fault, but also the characters’ desire for power.
