Agenda Setting in the Internet strengthens its effect on information consumers

It is not a secret that mass media are influencing our minds by forming particular opinions and attitudes. However, everyone should learn that they leave us no chance to choose the information. This kind of manipulation is called agenda-setting.

The theory of agenda-setting is that media have a significant impact on the public directly by the selection of what they cover. Media gives us what to think. According to this theory, the news feed is a socially constructed and edited reality that is controlled by journalists, editors, publishers, and owners of the mass media. The media choose the events for the audience to focus on, thus, forcing us to perceive them as extremely important. What about the topics that were left out of media sight? Probably we will never know them.

However, it should be noted that agenda-setting on the Internet differs from traditional agenda-setting. The difference is that the Internet is in permanent competition with traditional media, mainly because it has a great advantage in terms of interactivity of users. Korean scientists, exploring the nature of the agenda on the Internet, drew the following conclusion. First, the opinion of a person, being spread through various online channels, synthesises public opinion, which in turn affects the coverage of news. It means the Internet can set the agenda for other media. Besides, the flow of agenda-setting between the Internet and mass media can occur inconsistently. For example, the topic covered in the media becomes relevant in the network after a certain time and vice versa.

Everyone will agree that top Internet bloggers play a big role in the Internet space. They are so popular that can make their own topics very significant, i.e. include them in the agenda.

Despite all the seeming accessibility of the Internet and computers, there is still a certain stratum of people who do not get news from the Internet. Thus, the so-called digital divide reduces the impact of agenda-setting on a certain part of news consumers.

In general agenda-setting on the Internet contributes to the fact that digital news can be made notable enough to appear on the agenda of the traditional media. At that agenda-setting on the Internet is very extensive, which allows the user to choose the content that he wants. Moreover, this alternative gives an opportunity to form a complete view of a particular event.
