Analyzing the Consequences of Death Penalty

The paper that was published in 2004, The Death Penalty in the Facts & Figures, is a significant document that represents two main statements proclaimed by the death penalty defenders. It was written by the Amnesty International famous for its struggle against penal and judicial system.

In the 6th point of the paper that, is based on a study taken by the United Nations in 1988 and updated in 2002, in which assessed the link between the death penalty and homicide, the researchers came to the conclusion that it would be wrong to agree with the hypothesis that capital punishment deters murder to a greater extent than does the threat and application of the less severe, at first glance, the punishment like life sentence.

Basing on the same study, in the next paragraph they write that "statistics of abolitionist countries do not contain any indication that the abolition of the death penalty had negative consequences." It is complemented by the fact that, in their opinion, "the fact that statistical trends remain unchanged, evidence is compelling that countries need not to be afraid of sudden and serious changes in the curve of crime if the death penalty will rely to a lesser point."

Most of reasons that approve or not the execution can be heard are either just too emotional, or altogether outside the scope of the permissible in polite discussion.

So-called "economic argument for", according to which the price of a criminal offense should be made initially unacceptable, looks very reasonable on their background and what is important, it is overthought. Thus, it is the death penalty is a deterrent factor in crime.

For example, Nobel laureate Gary Becker believes that an important role as a deterrent is played by the executioner. Roy Adler and Michael Summers wrote that each death penalty provides on 75 kills less in each subsequent year.

Many of them, while they themselves are opposed to such penalties, at the same time acknowledge publicly that the Death Penalty is indeed, according to their estimates, an important crime deterrent means.

At the same time it must be admitted that the use of the death penalty as a crime preventive measures relating to morality, as in Islamic countries, or to a wide range of offenses and not only serious crimes, as in China and North Korea, does not carry the same deterrent force, it is because there could potentially be convicted far greater number of people than in Western countries.
