The Misunderstood Symbols in Scarlet Letter

Written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the book ‘The Scarlet Letter’ is full of symbolic elements. There are so many misunderstood symbols, but one of the most complex ones in this book is Pearl. She is the daughter of Hester Prynne. Throughout the novel, this young girl Pearl is always changing. And thanks to these changes she develops into a dynamic symbol, which is not static. What is the symbolism which concerns Pearl in the novel ‘Scarlett Letter’?

According to the topic of “The Scarlet Letter”, for her sins Hester received a scarlet letter A, which should be worn upon the woman’s chest. With the help of this way, Puritans treated the criminals. And in this novel woman was treated for the crime of adultery. It was predicted that Hester would walk through the streets, and she would always look down on this letter, remembering that she committed the terrible crime. This Puritan treatment should give her much mental grief and anguish.

But considering this situation from the other point of view, treatment of God for Hester for her sins differed from the simple physical token. He gave her a strange punishment – her daughter Pearl who was considered to be the unique child. Such kind of a punishment, which was given to the main character by God, was a constant physical and mental memory of what Hester had done wrong. And, unfortunately, she couldn’t escape it and would always remain this.

So while reading we can understand that in this aspect Pearl is a symbol of God’s punishment of Hester Prynne for her crime. Hester’s life was ruined for the long period of time and it was the ultimate price which she paid for her daughter. Woman’s life was never be filled with the joy because of Pearl, but instead it was constantly nagging.

Pearl was so interested in the mother’s scarlet letter A, which she always wore. The girl also wanted to have the same decoration, and sometimes her mother and she even played in the game when Pearl tried to hit the letter. But in situations, when mother and daughter went into the town together, the children always made fun of the girl. So Pearl should throw dirt at them to protect herself. With the help of such method author wanted to provide the symbol of decimation of the life of Hester and her mental state as well. And during the novel it was demonstrated how many troubles mother had with her daughter Pearl. But from the other hand, she also had the problems with the crime she committed, which she would remember till the end of the life.
