The Yanomami People of Tibet

The Yanomami people are a tribe living in certain isolation in South America. Those people live in the mountains and rainforests of Venezuela and Brazil.

They probably migrated through the Bering Straits between America and Asia about 15,000 years ago to reach South America. The total population of the tribe is about 32,000 people.

The Yanomami people occupy the area of more than 9,600,000 hectares in Brazil. It is about twice the size of Switzerland. They also use about 8,200,000 hectares of Casiquiare Biosphere Reserve in Venezuela. Together, these lands form the largest forested indigenous territory in the world.

There are more than 1,000 gold-miners illegally working on Yanomami land. They transmit deadly diseases, for instance, malaria as well as pollute the forest and rivers with mercury. Cattle ranchers invade and deforest the eastern fringe of their area.

The health of Yanomami tribe experiences certain problems. They do not have full access to critical medical care.

Currently, the Brazilian congress is debating a bill. If it is approved, large-scale mining will be permitted in indigenous areas. This will be harmful to Yanomami people as well as other tribes leaving in Brazil.

The Yanomami people do not have the full understanding of the effects of mining for their living.

President of Hutukara Yanomami Association, as well as a leading Yanomami spokesman, named Davi Kopenawa knows about the dangers and tries to warn people about that. According to him, the tribe does not want the approval of the law. They want their lands remained untouched by others.

Kopenawa believes that mining destroys nature, including the rivers, the streams, the fish and the environment, which will eventually lead to stopping the existence of the tribe.

There are also uncontacted Yanomami, named Moxateteu. They also live in the Yanomami territory, supposedly in the part of the Yanomami territory with the concentration of illegal gold miners.

It is dangerous for the Moxateteu to contact miners because this may lead to the conflict. Also, the miners spread different diseases, which could be deadly for the Moxateteu who do not have immunity to those diseases.

Currently, FUNAI tries to determine where the Moxateteu are as well as tries to make a contact with them.

According to Davi Kopenawa, there are many uncontacted Indians living in these areas. He is pretty sure that they suffering because of the mining processes.
