The Historical Discovery of Hawaii by James Cook

If you examine a modern map, you can see that the Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago consisting of 24 islands and atolls, located in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean. Since 1959 a big part of Hawaii is the 50th state of the United States.

For many centuries, the Hawaiian Islands remained unknown to the people of Europe. During the world travels of the age of great geographical discoveries, the ships of the Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch navigators sailed either southward or northward of the Islands. The past assumptions that the Hawaii has been long known by Spanish and Dutch navigators are currently considered to be unfounded.

On January 18, 1778, James Cook's expedition discovered the first four Islands of the Hawaiian archipelago. A famed explorer marked them on the map and named the newly found land the Sandwich Islands, in honour of Lord John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. Thus, the date of 18 January is chronicled as the day of the Hawaiian Islands discovery.

As soon as James Cook came ashore, he saw a crowd of aborigines, who fell to the knees and began to pay their respects to him. Hawaiians believed that the stranger was the God-man. Cook gave the islanders gifts that smoothed the way to friendly relations. Moreover, the seafarers managed to establish the mutually advantageous trade. Unfortunately, a good relationship was soon ruined because the sailors abused Hawaiian women, despite the fact that Cook punished them for it.

A year later, in January 1779 James Cook finished exploring the Sandwich Islands, including Hawaii. On February 4, the expedition went to sea. But because of the raging storm the travellers had to turn back to Hawaii. This time, the islanders were not happy about their return and stole the boat from the ship. Angered Cook decided to take the tribe's king as a hostage to make the natives return the boat. However, the brave captain fell short of his expectations. Hawaiians killed Cook and four sailors of his. The remains of the prominent discoverer were buried in the local bay.

From that moment began a new stage in the history of the Hawaiian Islands. Here came the missionaries to turn the local population to Catholicism. The immigrants from Britain, the Japanese Islands, the Philippines and China settled down the beautiful lands. Thus, the modern variegated population of Hawaii appeared.
