Unusual and outstanding “Forever...” By Judy Blume
“Forever…” is a really amazing novel and it’s quite unique for those time. It was first published in 1975. It is very important to mention that this novel was written during the 70s sex revolution. Let’s figure out what this story is about. It’s about young girl Katherine, her first love and her first sexual encounter. Let’s consider the plot of this fantastic novel. The story is mainly about Katherine. Katherine Danziger has friends and a nice family that loves her a lot. They help a young girl all the time during the story. Her family can talk to her about sex, relationships and love. Katherine’s parents and grandparents want Katherine to be able to make sensible, informed decisions. As the story goes on, we can see how her family helps her during her journey to self-discovery and gives her information that she needs to make wise decisions.
So, Katherine wants to experience life. She meets Michael Wagner at a New Year’s Eve party and they fall into first love. Soon they think that it is love and they will be together forever. They try to spend together as much time as they can and indeed this relationship makes Katherine more confident. She learns a lot of new things about life, sex and love. At the same time Katherine doesn’t want to lose her virginity because of physical satisfaction. She wants her relationship with her boyfriend Michael to have emotions attached to it. Michael is not demanding but we can see that he wants a physically intimate relationship and Katherine feels pressured. However, during the story their relations becomes deeper and finally she relents to his gentle suggestions. Obviously, book covers their first time having sex. Katherine talks about sex with her friend Erica. Erica believes that sex is just a physical act, but Katherine believes that sex is emotionally loaded action. Another important question in this novel is the question of birth control. Her mother and grandmother gives her information that helps her realize the seriousness of sex. However, Michael and Katherine are both sent away for the summer and during that time, her Grandfather dies. Katherine need to understand is “forever” with Michael really “forever”.
Finally, Katherine understands that she is too young for a forever relationship and that Michael is just a stepping-stone in her life journey. She realizes that when somebody is young, “forever” doesn’t mean the same as “everlasting”.
