Victorian period is known for the lots of changes, which took place in society in those times. The changes also concerned the right of women, especially those, who became wives. The degradation of these women in Victorian period is explained by many factors. Firstly, married woman began to have limited rights. After the marriage, wife relinquished to her husband all the rights to property and her personal wealth. According to the prior law, marries women were irresponsible and incompetent. In other words, they had nothing. Living in Victorian period, women were legally limited, because their properties went to the husbands.
The second peculiarity lies in the following. Women couldn’t get any juridical support, when it wasn’t organized by their husbands. Also it was important to get the agreement of the husband to ask for help in questions concerning the laws. These women were attributed by their contemporaries to the same category for minors, lunatics and criminals. It happened because they had no authority in the society.
In XVIII century one jurist from England, William Blackstone, certainly described the status of married women in society. He said that wife and husband are the one person in laws. But this one person is husband, and wife has no rights at all.
In Victorian period wives were considered to be like the chattel which the husband owned. The woman belonged to him and was dependent on him in everything. Any wife couldn’t sue to divorce or to ask to grow the children by her own. Women also had no rights to keep the money which husbands earned. All her activities were located at home. Wife’s tasks were to be homemaker, to bring up children, to be the keeper of family hearth. This historical period is described in the next way. Men were aggressive, strong and imperious, but their wives were gentle, calm, peaceful and obedient.
The degradation of wives in the Victorian period also took place in the bedroom. These unhappy women couldn’t manage their own bodies. It was forbidden to them to refuse the duties of wives. Only men decided what and when they did. Unfortunately, this period was not so nice for women, because they couldn’t solve any problem. Any wife had nothing, what was only her. Many sociologists prove that this time was really awful for female, because they had no place in society. Only men were the first and the only who could do everything what they want, including the management of their wives.
