Heroes from Different Novels

Dwelling upon the heroes of novels, the idea of a “hero” should be defined. It is possible to consider an ordinary man or woman taking extraordinary action for the good of humanity a hero. On the other hand, we can also think of famous tragic heroes in literature, who had to struggle with life and eventually face misfortune or death.

From different points of view, various literary characters can be considered heroes. For instance, Hamlet was a hero in a certain way, because he was trying to right the wrong of the murder of his father. However, the cost of his attempts was too high, even though he succeeded.

Oedipus, the mythical Greek king, was a tragic hero who had to struggle with fate, gods and his own pride. He was courageously searching for truth. The King Lear can be considered another tragic hero. He realizes his own foolishness when it is too late.

These men are great and heroic in spite of their weaknesses and moral fragility. They are willing to grow and change, and to become better.

Another group of heroes consists of the ones who live good lives and help other people to do so. The example of such a hero is Pilate from Morrison's “Song of Solomon”. When her death is approaching, she says that if she had known more people, he would have loved them all. Her extraordinary life was the search for peace, harmony and love.

Jane Eyre, the main character of Charlotte Bronte’s novel, loves courageously and devotes her life to her beloved man. This simple, modest, yet strong woman is the example of a hero. Mr. Rochester, her beloved, who has gone through much suffering and loss, also lives a heroic and difficult life. He risks his life to save his sick wife and even after he has lost his eyesight his spirit is not broken.

Other examples of heroes can be a charming character from Dr. Seuss, a many-sided one like Henry Fleming, or a confused teenager from “The Catcher in the Rye”.

The people who we consider heroes in literature, either positive or negative ones, are far from being perfect. They seek their own truth, just like we do in our lives. Their advantage is that they are open to change and they continuously grow personally. Their mission is to show the reader the way of life to strive for, in spite of everything that might be in their way. The hero is a symbol we want to compare our lives to. He seeks redemption of guilt and rebirth, even though his ways might be far away from iconic.
