George Orwell’s Criticism in Literature

George Orwell was a well-known British publicist, novelist, and literary critic. As a book reviewer, he wrote long and sophisticated books which had an influence on the genre of criticism.

As a conclusion to his essay on Charles Dickens, Orwell presented himself as “a man who was always fighting against something”. He emphasized that he was fighting in the open and was not frightened. He described himself as a “nineteenth-century liberal, a free intelligence” who was generously angry.

George Orwell wrote a critical work on the play by Bernard Shaw “Arms and the Man”. He believed that this play was Bernard Shaw’s best one and that it was most likely to stay socially relevant. War was not shown in this play as a romantic and entertaining adventure, and this appealed to Orwell.

In his essay in defense of P.G. Wodehouse Orwell wrote a humorous evaluation of his works. He stated that Wodehouse’s broadcasts from Germany during the war did not mean that he was disloyal to his country. Orwell wrote that the Ministry of Information exaggerated the negative meaning of Wodehouse’s actions with the purpose of propaganda.

In his allegorical and satirical novel “Animal Farm” the novelist recognized the rule of Joseph Stalin in the Soviet Union as dictatorship and criticized it.

In the essays describing criticism itself, such as “Confessions of a Book Reviewer” and “Good Bad Books”, Orwell explored why a good entertaining novel was better than a bad one on a serious topic.

Orwell criticized book reviewers for praising average works too much, because it caused discredit among readers. He blamed periodicals for playing up to advertisers and believed that the solution to that would be independent media.

Orwell believed that only the people who treated the novel as art could work as book reviewers. He stated that reviewers should be the people who were interested in discovering the deep sense of the book, what it was actually about. Besides, Orwell suggested that it would be best for the book reviews to be done by amateurs and not practicing writers. He thought that the feedback of such a person would be more unbiased than the one of a bored professional. According to Orwell, American reviews were better than English ones because they were more amateurish.

George Orwell supported sincere book reviews, because he wanted the reader to be able to trust the appraisals or criticism encountered in literature.
