Practical Counselling Session: What It Should Be

Any person time to time becomes a counsellor for their friends, colleagues, or other people. Still, some situations require the help of a professional counsellor. A professional counsellor is a highly trained person who knows several counselling approaches and uses those that most suit their clients.

Counselling is assisting clients in resolving personal, social, or psychological difficulties and problems.

Both terms ‘counselling’ and ‘psychotherapy’ are used to describe the same process because both are related to overcoming personal difficulties.

Counselling is an approach highlighting the intellectual and emotional experience of a client, how a client is feeling and what he or she thinks about the certain problem.

A counsellor knows that all people are different. During the counselling process, the counsellor should not try to fit clients into his or her idea of what their client should be and how they should act.

The aim of counselling session is to enable the client to explore many aspects of their life as well as feelings, by talking freely and openly. Talking like this is not often possible with friends or family, who may be emotionally involved in a certain situation and have biases and opinions that may not be desirable for the success of the counselling. The counsellor should not be emotionally involved with the client. He or she should not judge or give a piece of advice. The aim of the counsellor is to allow the client to express difficult feelings, for instance, resentment, anger, guilt, etc. That is why it is important to provide a confidential environment.

The client may be encouraged by the counsellor to examine certain parts of their lives that they may have found impossible or difficult to face before. It is possible to explore some early childhood experiences to make the situation clearer about the reactions of the client in certain situations.

If the counselling session is effective, the client will feel less confused, be able to make a decision toward positive changes in his or her life. Effective counselling is not about giving a piece of advice or acting on someone else's behalf, but it is enabling the client to make their own choices.

A good counsellor should possess several important skills, including good communication skills and being able to build a certain amount of rapport with the client without becoming emotionally involved. Also, counsellors should be empathetic.
