Statistical Views of Smoking in Today’s Generation

Smoking has so deeply entered into our everyday life that it is perceived by most, if not as a familiar component of the entourage, then as a quite ordinary event that doesn’t attract attention.

Doctors involved in the problem of tobacco addiction have a lot of interesting facts and stories about smoking.

For example, one person dies every six seconds from the effects of smoking and related diseases in the world. Among all those living today, who in one way or another are passive smokers, 600,000 people will die within the year. 10 out of a 100 people, who smoke up to 15 cigarettes a day, will die from cancer. Approximately 15% of deaths annually are due to coronary heart disease and/or stroke. It is about 8 million people a year.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), today 1.3 billion people are addicted to tobacco. Smoking is recognized as one of the most severe forms of drug addiction because of the physical and the psycho-physical addiction of the organism to tobacco.

Smoking statistics clearly shows that the a lot of cases of cancer, diseases of the cardiovascular system, central nervous system, digestive and respiratory organs are caused or catalyzed by tobacco smoking. 98.96% of all patients with lung cancer in the world are smokers who have been smoking for five years or more.

Smoking tobacco kills one person on the planet every 6 seconds. Less people die in car accidents. Worldwide, the average age of a beginner smoker is below 15 years. One can safely say that tobacco smoking has long turned into a pandemic.

According to the statistics of smoking tobacco, the highest number of smokers is concentrated in Eastern Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Russian is the leader of the deaths caused by smoking. By the number of male smokers Russia takes the first place. By the number of women smokers Russia takes the 16th place. First place in the number of women smokers belongs to Austria.

Also, according to statistics, the total percentage of the smoking population to the non-smoking is essentially connected with the general level of education of the population. Thus, the number of smokers among the population with a low level of education is on average 65-84%, while the number of smokers among people with higher education or a scientific degree is only 10-22%.
