The Effects of The Great Depression in Australia

The Great Depression that lasted from 1929 to 1932 significantly affected people living in Australia. For many people, this period started even before the market crash in prices and lasted until the World War II.

Even before the stock market crash, unemployment in Australia was at 10 %. Crash in The Wall Street started a severe depression for the whole industrialized world.

Unemployment in Australia reached 21% by the mid of 1930. The highest unemployment rate of 32% was reached in 1932. In 1930, Australia was visited by Sir Otto Niemeyer from the Bank of England who advised governments to implement a deflationary policy. He insisted that wages must be cut, which is needed for making exports more competitive to raise profits. Niemeyer advised cutting payments in all social services. Also, he demanded Australia to pay its international loan obligations to the UK. This caused a range of political differences, including dismission of Jack Lang, the Premier of New South Wales, due to his refusal to pay the loan obligations.

The impact of Great Depression on Australian society was devastating. People left without work and a steady income had to lose their homes. Lots of people had to live in makeshift dwellings with poor sanitation and heating.

People had to do different things to survive. In lots of families, fathers left their families and became itinerant workers. Sons sat in the kitchen day by day, betting on horse racing, or get engaged in a crime. Daughters often attempted some amateur prostitution.

Working class children had to leave school at 13 or 15 years old.

Because home-making was still considered a woman's responsibility, a woman could work all day scrubbing floors and then at home be demanded by her unemployed husband to cook dinner and keep the house clean.

It was a little bit easier to find jobs by young people, but they usually could not count on getting a higher position. Lots of young workers were sacked by the time they turned 16, 18 or 21years of old.

Migrants were not happy because they had to work for less salary.

During the Great Depression, lots of Australians was disappointed in the abilities of their government. That is why a range of extremist or radical organizations gathered popularity and strength. As a result of such events, there was the large-scale public dissatisfaction.

In 1932, Labor government of James Scullin started major changes that brought much relief from the Great Depression.
