The Main Character Holden Caulfield

Holden Caulfield is the main character of the novel “The Catcher in the Rye” by J. D. Salinger. He is a 17 year old narrator of the story. Holden tells about the events which happened during the two days of the previous December when a football match between Pencey Prep and Saxon Hall schools took place.

We can see Holden as a young lad who is struggling with life. He is out of athletic shape because of smoking, and he is depressed, angry, resentful, confused, kind and caring at the same time.

Holden despises the artificiality of prep schools with their cruel atmosphere and lies, and resents the world of adults. Unfortunately, he has no other choice but to enter this world. As a teenager, he is seduced by the traps of the adult life, such as smoking, drinking, being intimate and the seeming independence. Nevertheless, his soul is still pure. He does not want to lose his innocence, integrity and original thinking upon entering adulthood.

In spite of his confusion, Holden’s attitude towards women is admirable. When a girl refuses to be intimate with him, he stops making advances. He cannot be close with a girl unless he knows her well and is very attracted to her. As a young boy, he still sees this as a weakness and does not know that these are the treasures of his heart. Holden’s interactions with the prostitute Sunny are funny and touching, because none of them is an adult and they both resist that world.

Holden often feels on the verge of suicide. His despair is so deep that he literally feels that he might fall into an abyss when he is crossing the street. This shows that he is not understood and not wanted in that world, and he feels like an alien. In the moments of despair he asks Allie, his dead brother, to help him overcome it. Holden still does not want to accept death as a part of life, and he denies it. He is haunted by the thoughts of Allie lying dead at the cemetery, and he feels sorry for him. Holden has an overwhelming desire to make pleasant moments last forever. This desire is symbolized by watching the displays at the museum, where the figures are always in the same place and constantly do the same things. Holden is fearful of the future and change, and he still does not realize that change is the only way for life to make progress.

Holden Caulfield is a typical adolescent and his feelings are familiar to anyone who has been his age. The reason the reader likes Holden is his sincerity about his feelings.
