History of Cultural Revolution of the 1920's

Historically, it is clear that the 1920s were the era of the final victory of the urban cultural values over the old rural standards of living of 19 century.

Campaigning for a ban on alcohol was carried out in the country for decades, and by 1918 the trade by alcohol has been banned in 28 states. On January 16, 1919 The 18th Amendment to the Constitution, that prohibits the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcoholic beverages, has been ratified by the requisite majority in Congress and state legislatures.

Before The World War I the United States came to an unprecedented number of immigrants. The law on national origin (1924) has sharply reduced immigration and introducing permanent quota – only 2% of the number of each of the national communities of the United States in 1890. Virtually it secured the discrimination of immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe.

During this period, the subject of national attention was the number of trials. One of them is the trial of John Scopes in Dayton (Tennessee pcs.). This biology teacher deliberately violated a state law prohibiting the teaching of any doctrine denying the biblical creation of man by God, and expounded his students the theory of evolution of Charles Darwin. Although Scopes was convicted during the trial the position of religious fundamentalists were severely discredited. World response in 1920 was the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti, workers of Italian origin, accused of robbery and murder. Defenders of civil liberties have tried to save them from execution, arguing that they had not been convicted on the basis of evidence, but for radical anarchist views. At the same time, effort and manifestations of racism were especially pronounced in the activities Klux Klan - an organization which pursued the former slaves and their descendants.

The weakening of moral values, characterizing of the 1920s, was reflected in the activities of the administration of Warren G. Harding. The return to power of the Republican Party led to an increase of tariffs, reduction of taxes and heating antitrust fight. Although the period of economic prosperity came immediately after the war, most Americans felt its fruits, but total revenue growth has not touched the industrial workers and farmers. When choosing political partners Harding made some serious mistakes. Some of them are deeply mired in corruption scandals.
