Freud’s beliefs about societies’ role in human unhappiness

Civilization and Its Discontents is a well-known book written by Sigmund Freud in 1929. In was published in 1930 in German. This book is one of the most important works of Freud.

In his book, Freud explains why civilization may lead to human unhappiness. He believed that any person needs to have an unlimited freedom to be happy. Civilization may cause tension and repression of instincts. According to Freud, a feeling of mild contentment occurs when any desirable situation is prolonged.

Lots of primitive instincts, for instance, having sexual gratification or the desire to kill may be harmful to a human community. That is why people had to create laws prohibiting killing, adultery, rape, etc. that are severely punished if the rules are broken. According to Freud, the law restricts people’s possibilities for happiness. This process is an inherent quality of civilization that leads to feelings of discontent among people.

Freud compared religious feeling to the "oceanic feeling" of limitlessness, wholeness, and eternity. Freud thought of the oceanic feeling as a regression into a state of consciousness occurred before differencing the ego from the world of objects. According to Freud, the need for religious feeling comes from the helplessness of infant and the longing for the father. There is no greater infantile need than a protection of the father. Freud thought that the oceanic feeling became connected with religion in cultural practices.

Freud also thought that religion is used by people to avoid the suffering in the world. At the same time, it is natural for people to search for pleasure. Considering that certain things that bring pleasure may also bring certain problems and difficulties, people tend to search for a safe way to be happy. That is why people started to implement certain rules to secure themselves from being hurt. Sometimes the desire for safety overcomes the desire for happiness. Freud believed that there are three main sources of displeasure that people attempt to master, including people’s own mortal and painful existence, the destructive and cruel aspects of the natural world, and the suffering related to the understanding that people must live with other people in a society.

According to Freud, the last probably is the most painful for people, because living in society restricts their natural feelings and desires.
