A Misrepresentations of African Americans in the Media

It feels like the entertainment industry has made decent progress in shaping the way African Americans are pictured by today’s America. As a white male who doesn’t have experience in an actual black family unit, I’m not sure exactly how accurate media portrayals might be. However, I’m fully aware of the stereotypes, which often plague representatives of the African American race. Myths as well as untruths about the work ethic also and sexual ferocity of Black males, the careless or unskilled parenting of Black moms and dads, not to mention the general moral deterioration of the Black family in general, run rampant in today’s movies, TV shows as well as other forms of media.

Through real life experience and interactions, classes, books and common sense, I have personally put these stereotypes to rest specially for myself. I know for sure that they aren’t accurate at all. It’s sad that there’re a lot of people, falling victim to various stereotypes, while many more folks face prejudice and pain because of them. After watching some popular films, it seems to me that the vast majority of current movies are aimed at an African American audience, backing negative stereotypes of African Americans.

When Hollywood pitches an idea for a movie, we should realize that it’s aimed solely towards a specific audience. Some of these films are specially aimed towards African American teenagers. Such movies normally star African American actors as well as actresses, often popular rap stars, and they normally take place in an urban setting. I have recently seen two such comedy films. These are “Friday”, starring Ice Cube, and also “How High” with Method Man along with Redman. Considering these films star well-known rap performers, they are meant to attract those artists’ basic audience, African American teenager. However, upon watching these movies, I was extremely disturbed rather than amused. Due to a great number of racial stereotypes in these movies, I couldn’t help but rather feel that they were meant to generate tons of fun at African Americans. The personages in these films held the same level of stupidity and buffoonery that the stars of racist black face movies of the early 1900’s had. These films usually illustrate the Black family in an extremely negative light, so there’s no wonder that such movies do real damage to not only how white US citizens perceive how the Black family really functions, but to Black families, viewing the movies too.
