Elements of Effective Teams

As not every group is a team, every team is not effective. The effectiveness of groups and teams can be assessed in terms of the results obtained. The result can be quantitative, qualitative or expressed in numerical form. There is a close link between qualitative and quantitative performance elements. Teams operate effectively if tasks are achieved, team members successfully work together, and respect the needs and requirements of each other. Groups work inefficiently, if the tasks are performed poorly or not at all satisfied, the group members are divided, and experience a state of frustration.

In the context of organizational behavior, efficiency is the optimal ratio of production, quality, flexibility, satisfaction, competitiveness, and development.

In other words, the main elements of effective team are:

  • Meeting the needs of an individual member of a team.
  • Successful interaction in a team.
  • Solution of the problem indicated for the team.

These elements are interdependent. Personal satisfaction depends not only on the successful solution of the tasks, but also on the quality of relationships in the team, as well as the social aspects of teamwork.

Watching the work of teams in organizations, we can see that most of the energy, if not all, is directed to the exact solution of the problem. Of course, this is important, but we must not forget about the process itself. Even the team that has reached its goals can hardly be considered effective if its members have conflicting views and disappointed in their organization so that they intend to look for another job. Therefore, as additional characteristics of team effectiveness we can consider the readiness of its members to fulfill the new tasks, and that they have the desire to continue working together.

In addition to internal factors, the work of the team is also influenced by external factors (other groups, teams, internal and external users, organizational culture, etc.)

Obviously, it is impossible to come up with a set of rules the following of which will necessarily lead to the creation of an effective team. The reasons for the success of the team are much more difficult, and they ca not be reduced only to the fulfillment of a set of requirements. However, since the consequences of ineffective team work can be expensive, it would be useful to consider some general directions based on the study results of research, experience, and facts.
