There is a social contract theory which was provided by John Locke. In this theory the sociologist proves that citizens of any country have the rights to vote, to share their public opinions and to give the common consent to the government. Giving the characteristics of American Democracy, it is said that the most important feature is a popular consent. Popular consent describes the wishes of citizens, and the government using their powers must do to complete these wishes and ideas for those who have chosen them. John Locke was among the first sociologists who promote this theory. In modern life Americans can give their consent to the actions of the government with the help of voting. In addition, lots of residents of States ignore this right and don’t vote at all.
The resident’s right to vote has two sides. It is describes from the both, so it is as a privilege as a duty of citizens. Moreover, it plays the important role, because voting in every election; citizens are sure in maintaining the representative and democratic systems of government. People who refuse their rights have no voices in government. Unfortunately, the statistic shows that the great amount of young Americans don’t vote in elections. Taking into account the citizens (with ages from eighteen to thirty), it is considered to be that approximately thirty millions of them didn’t take part and vote in the Presidential election in 2000.
Lots of scientists who learn political issues pointed that there is a self-fulfilling cycle: candidates don’t pay much attention to the young voters because they ignore the elections, and young adults don’t vote because candidates don’t pay enough attention to them.
The group of young voters is the largest block of voters, who don’t participate in elections in the country. According to this, sociologists divide them into three categories: Unlikely, likely and potential voters. To likely voters belong the people who can visit the elections, but they need to be invited and asked. Such people usually have stronger learning in politics. Lots of them have the active position in the political scene. That’s why if the concrete candidate talks to them with promising offers, they will come and give their votes in the elections. But still, as practice shows, the amount of these people is not increasing. Next generations don’t trust the elections and ignore their rights of vote. But their votes are able to change the results of election.
