Humans and Replicants in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner

Blade runner was released in 1982 and it’s an exciting sci-fi film. The story of Blade runner is based on a science fiction novel written by Philip K. Dick. The story is set in 2019 and it shows futuristic cities and futuristic society. Director represents us the Tyrell Corporation, which produces "replicants" to work and serve humans. Replicants are genetically engineered (human) beings. The current ‘generation’ of replicant is the Nexus-6. They look the same as humans but they are stronger and smarter than humans are. Nexus can also develop complex emotions and feelings over time, just like regular humans. Because of this Tyrell corporation decided them to have a four-year lifespan. It happened because of difficult control in the case of longer life. Some of them have rebelled against their subjection, so a special police, Blade Runners, exists to "retire" unwilling replicants. When people talk about killing replicants they use a euphemism: they're not murdering replicants; they're just "retiring" them. It helps people to hide behind the mask of alienation and not to feel ashamed. The new generation of replicants is very difficult to spot. They are so like humans that an elaborate emotional test must be used to identify them, rather than a blood or DNA test. However, people use replicants like slaves. They are viewed as lesser beings simply because people view them as lesser beings. At the same time, there is a difference between humans and replicants. People live longer than replicants, but replicants are smarter and stronger. Corporation produces Replicants but humans are created ‘naturally’. So, replicants are represented like living creatures with their own feeling and life. We can see that Roy unexpectedly shows mercy towards Deckard(Harrison Ford), sparing his life even though Deckard was just trying to kill him. When Roy dies, remembering the amazing things he's seen, Roy realizes the value of human life. Roy’s death changes Deckard and he runs away with a replicant to try to live a life of peace. By the way, Ridley Scott straight-up stated that Deckard is a Replicant. People are afraid of replicants and think that they can only bring the public benefit or the danger. Ridley Scott shows us that there is no real freedom in this film. People don’t decide how to live. Big corporations make all important decisions. The film asks the ultimate philosophical question: What does it mean to be human?
