Playing Beatie Bow is a children's book written by Ruth Park. For the first time, it was published on 31 of January 1980.

The story of the book is about Abigail Kirk, a 14-year-old girl who lives in Sydney, Australia. She is very worried because of her parents' separation. Her father left her and her mother, and that is why the girls starting to build a wall to protect herself. He is back now and wants her and her mother to move overseas with him. At the same time, Natalie, a young neighbor, has become interested in the scary game named Beatie Bow. One day, Abigail takes Natalie and Vincent Crown to the playground to play a game. The children started to play the game called Beatie Bow. Natalie sees a little furry girl and wonders why she is not playing with them. Natalie and Abigail attempt to talk to her and involved into their game, but the girls runs away.

Another day, Abigail has a fight with her mother and returns to the playground. She sees the girls again, but the girl runs away. Abigail starts chasing her. Somehow the girl is taken back in time. She appears in 1873 and gets involved with a shopkeeper's family. Abigail finds out that the name of the girl that she was chasing is Beatie Bow. Most of events are set in real-life locations around Rocks district.

The girl hears things of the gift and the stranger, but cannot understand what they mean. Abigail wants to leave the family, but they do not allow her to go away. Then she manages to escape and soon she is kidnapped. The girl is taken to the Suez Canal, and locked with a deranged woman named Doll in an attic.

Abigail discovers that she is the Stranger who has to help the family preserve the family gift.

This book mixes time travel, historical fiction, fantasy, and romance and that is why the book is suitable for a wide range of readers. The romance is sweet and gentle, perfect for younger readers. The characters of the book are quite vivid, including intelligent and quarrelsome Beatie, kind Dovey, wise Grandmother, warm hearted Judah, annoying Gibbie, and wounded father. The historical parts are pretty interesting, allowing to understand that each era has its advantages.

The girl builds the wall to protect herself, and she really tries to avoid people and things that may be harmful for her. She got the chance to spend some time away from her problems which helps her open eyes up to other people.
