The Right to Die: is it worth living or terminate the life for the incurables?

What if a person wishes to die in the term he or she chooses? It is a hotly debated topic within health care institutions, families and legislative bodies.

Thousands of people are diagnosed terminal illness with a prognosis of left time to live.

Despite physical sufferings, they are doomed to make a choice whether to give up or continue to fight. If they are still conscious they wonder if it is worth living with a disease they have. If they have already fallen to coma, it starts to be a family concern whether their relative should stay in prolonged distraction.

In the USA the right to die on one’s own terms is no longer a taboo. At the moment there are five states that have legalised the right of a terminally-ill patient to ask for life-ending pills. Some polls show that seven of ten American citizens support this idea.

The decision to die is not an easy one. It takes hours and days; it takes much effort and series of debates before a person initiates the request to the doctor. Moreover, to make the request eligible, a patient undertakes a lot of paperwork. The main condition – he or she has to be mentally competent while asking for life termination. Another important precaution before making the final decision is that a patient has to take the medication himself. However, many people still do not support the idea of want-to-die will. They view it as a suicide which is not appropriate for any secular world or religious community. At the same time more and more people say that right-to-die law gives people the opportunity to be released the prison of interminable sufferings.

Still, three are a lot of arguments against this right. First, many people believe that there are still so many cases of doctor’s mistakes that the chance to be cured should not be neglected. Secondly, nevertheless, a doctor does not give a lethal pill to the patient he violates the oath of Hippocrates. Some consider that if allowing patients to die, it will legalise murder. Moreover, every religion considers taking one’s life an attempt to go against God’s will. Insurance companies, unethical doctors and ill-willed relatives will take the chance of eliminating a person. In addition, the right for early death can lead to unpredicted socio-economic implications.

It may sound harsh but the right to die can be referred to the right to kill. People have been living and dying for centuries not having this right why not to live as it is today.
