Standardization of Language - linguistic discrimination and a social conflict

The question of language standardization occurred not once in a history of different languages. It is a hard topic and researches usually have quite opposite meanings about it. Yet, first of all, it is necessary to find out what this term means. Language standardization is the process, which helps to maintain and establish conventional language forms. In other words, when the process of standardization occurs it can strengthen cultural integrity or it can be a linguistic discrimination and a social conflict.

Standardization as a language development

If to look at standardization process as a development, we will see the necessity of a language to be changed. History knows a lot of examples of planned development of a language. For example, when some country was under ruling of other country with different language for a long time, its own language would suffer. Usually, people, in such situation, start to forget their mother tongue. To bring the level that previously was or even to develop the new level people need standardization. Scientists work to develop grammar, syntax, phonetics. Poets and writers create a special color of this language.

Standardization as a linguistic discrimination

Most of our countries are multination. We live with people who have different appearance, culture and language. Usually, such situations are not problematic, because the number of foreign people in one country is quite small. Yet, there are cases where we can notice a problem, like when people try to make some dialect a national language, or a few dialects combine with a national language. In this case, the government or some other authority provides standardization of the language. From one point of view, it is discrimination, from the other one it is saving of one already developed language.

It is hard to decide whether the standardization is necessary or not. Sometimes, people start this process without any help of the authority. Writers, poets and just ordinary people do everything they can to save their language from dying or changing. Sometimes, they go against the authority just to protect their language. It happens that the authority provides standardization, because they see that language can be seriously changed. Every such case is unique and every such case has its pros and cons, so for you to decide whether it is good or bad, you should look at the exact situation.
