Antony - A Deeply Flawed Character

Antony and Cleopatra is one of the most famous literary works written by William Shakespeare. Basically, this play determines the stereotypes generated from other dramas, and when it comes to Antony, this character is considered a deeply flawed protagonist. Readers should discuss how the author adopts the use of his language, imagery, and different dramatic constructions throughout this play to portray Antony as a deeply flaws person while maintain him as a tragic hero.

The tragedy of Antony is caused by different situations that are beyond his personal ability to change. For instance, he is torn between his life in Alexandria and his own honor. He is also influenced by many inner flaws of his own self, including impetuousness, lack of enough political interest, pursuing personal pleasures, and so on. Many people agree that Antony has his feet in both worlds.

The author didn’t have any hard task in making his a tragic hero, so Antony is defined as a man of his noble stature with some tragic flaws, such as arrogance and over confidence, so he suffers his downfall, but it’s his own fault because of many factors beyond his control. The downfall that Antony suffers exceeds the crime, but this tragic hero gets some self-awareness in the end. It’s hard to reject the opinion that he is a tragic hero because there are many proofs offered by Shakespeare in the plot.

The author uses the language that allows him to present this character as the one who is pitied, and this aspect is paramount in introducing any tragic hero. He is also represented as some strumpets fool, and Antony feels helpless when he is faced with the charms and female assets of Cleopatra. This is what establishes distinct links with readers in accepting that Cleopatra is one of the weak sides of this character.

In addition, William Shakespeare uses the striking imagery to describe the relationships of the main characters to remind readers that it resembles the images of the fish that is caught in the hook. The first meeting of Antony and Cleopatra helps readers to understand his submissions to her, and it’s one of his prominent flaws that lead this man to his fall from grace. His own awareness that this relationship with Cleopatra may ruin his political positions and honor are quite evident too. The author also encourages the audience to identify this situation because Antony is just a man with his weaknesses.

Antony and Cleopatra is one of the most famous literary works written by William Shakespeare. Basically, this play determines the stereotypes generated from other dramas, and when it comes to Antony, this character is considered a deeply flawed protagonist.
