Women's Role During 18th Century

During the 16th century, prostitution happened to be a common profession among Chinese and Italian females, and in particular in Venice. As Margaret Rosenthal, an active researcher on courtesans, states, this phenomenon took place due to the constraints, which were put upon females. In both societies, female citizens were provided with little rights compared to males. Whether these females belonged to the upper class or lower class, they were mostly expected to work within the confines of a family setting as a homemaker. A female’s role was mainly limited to the domestic domain in compliance with societal standards in those two places. Thus, those domestically disinclined started looking for alternative lifestyles. Therefore, the profession of a courtesan became very popular with females. A courtesan appeared to be a type of upper-class prostitute, renowned for her extreme beauty as well as lavish attire. Unlike up-to-date prostitutes simply exchanging sex for money, they acted like professional lovers.

The vast majority of courtesans were gifted in arts and literature, and in Venice, these females were subject to special schooling. In fact, in both cultures at the time, they were considered to be a female symbol of beauty, elegance and unruliness. Apparently, prostitution was officially forbidden in both societies. However, the numbers of courtesans kept growing, especially during the period 1500-1550. Though prostitution was illegal in both Venice and China, it was usually overlooked by the governments due to decent revenues. One of the most outstanding features of Venice during the 16th century was exactly this profession – a courtesan. Average prostitutes had nothing common with Venetian courtesans of that period. Many Venetian courtesans happened to be wealthy members of society. Females born into a respectable family who already had inherited her dowries boasted the option of becoming a courtesan since they were the best-dressed, most prosperous and most desired females around.

There was even a special school designed for courtesans, which only the upper class could really afford. In such educational institutions, courtesans obtained an education equivalent to a well-born male as they dealt with great literary works, political theories and fine arts. The major purpose of this schooling was to teach them to entertain males both inside and outside the bedroom.
