The Restriction Enzymes – story of its creation

This science is not so new, because the first applications of the biotechnology were dated around 5000 Before Christ. In those times people used usual and so simple breeding methods. The chains of animals and plants were crossed to create the greater kinds. For example, approximately 7000 years ago corn has been bred selectively to have increased size of kernel and to get more additional value of nutrition. Moreover, then cattle, especially pigs, have become the main sources of animal food and prior people. And it was realized with the help of selective breeding as well.

1953 is the year when the modern era of biotechnology started. It happened when biophysicist from Britain Francis Crick and American James Watson presented the new double-stranded model of DNA which was developed by them. DNA has the chain-like structure which is made up of the nucleotides. Now it looks like the twisted rope ladder. Restriction enzymes were discovered in 1960 by Werner Arber, Swiss microbiologist. These enzymes can cut DNA of small organisms.

The decisive year was 1973 when Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen, scientists from America, removed the specific and unique gene from the one bacterium. They also inserted this innovation into the restriction enzymes. The achievement of these scientists served as the foundation to recombinant the technology of DNA. That was the time when this technology was transformed into the genetic engineering. The sense of this recombinant technology is that the coded gene of the one organism is transferred into the coded gene of bacteria. The next step is that host a bacterium serves as the biologic factory which reproduces the transferred genes.
