Television Segregation Up to Now draws the line between white and black

Despite the fact that much has been done to ensure segregation to be not so obvious in the United States, racial stereotypes are very slowly disappearing from the consciousness of Americans. Many believe that the black people are lazy, stupid, criminal and unworthy to be treated equally with the whites. There are still housing areas, shops and schools for the whites. Even the map of Brooklyn's residential districts is marked with different colours to spot the minority living there. Therefore, those who say that segregation is reduced are simply disingenuous.

There is the 21st century discrimination in schools, communities, prisons, restaurants. Moreover, it exists where we can't even imagine. Take, for example, television. Television reflects the realities of modern life and it is pointless to deny the fact of discrimination on television shows, news, studio discussions, movies and sitcoms. For instance, none of the leading TV channels such as FOX, ABC, CBS has a minority program or a show. Only WB and UPN have a few minority representatives who take top positions on the channels.

If to have a closer look at TV channels policy, we can see a clear distinction between the white and black people. Whites are usually depicted as successful, reliable, educated citizens living in good housing conditions, while dressed in hoods blacks are presented as rappers and gangsters residing in disadvantaged areas. Almost in every movie, there is a hint of segregation. The news would rather show a black than a white criminal. There are frequently two or more bad black guys in every other American television drama. Sitcoms are racially neutral or focus particular skin colour of the characters – the life of a white family, black family life, and so on.

People are concerned about violence and overabundance of sex scenes on the screen, but they miss the fact that their children are not familiarised with racial diversity subconsciously absorbing the division according to national and racial identity.

This is what the TV is today because it is chiefly based on the concept of the whites, their stereotypes and prejudices. Despite the fact that the TV is full of black celebrities, segregation has not disappeared from the screen. Being one of the most powerful tools to shape and change the mass consciousness of the people, TV must recover from discrimination.
