The Greek Myth on Demeter and Her Daughter Persephone

Most people have no idea when Greek myths and legends were first told to the audience in their current forms and shapes. Basically, these incredible stories told them more about the ideas and concepts of ancient Greece in addition to its perceptions about the world. People in ancient Greece strongly believe that there were many gods whose basic responsibility was controlling the universe.

For instance, Zeus was the greatest god and he was in charge for thunder, weather, and lighting. When it thundered, people in ancient Greece believed that this strong god was working. They also thought that everything in the nature, including rivers, mountains, rocks, and other elements was and contained their gods and goddesses. Many of their stories and myths explain the secrets involved in the nature, while ancient Greeks also strongly believed that their goddess and goddesses were quite similar to human beings in their desires, dreams, and flaws, and they lived just like another big family. As an example, Zeus was their father, Hermes was the queen of all gods, and so on.

The basic purpose of all ancient Greek myths and stories was explaining to the people all kinds of natural phenomena, so they can be called the earliest form of science. When it comes to well-known myths about Demeter, the first fact that should be mentioned is that she was the goddess of agriculture, and she had a gorgeous and young daughter called Persephone.

One day, Persephone was playing with some friends, and she was captured by the god called Hades who took her to the underworld and wanted her to be his wife. No need to say that Demeter was in huge grief and she destroys all the crops and seeds in the planet, thus bringing a great famine and drought.

Hades is the brother of Zeus who arranges a certain compromise where his wife Persephone is allowed to return to mother for 2/3 of every year. However, she can’t return forever as she ate food in the underworld, so Demeter decides to greet their annual reunion with the replenishing of the planet and marks the annual descent of Persephone to Hades with ruining the entire agriculture. This means that the arrival of her daughter is people’s explanation of summers and springs, and her departure is winters and falls. This is how ancient Greeks tried to explain different seasons and weather conditions, and Persephone is their symbol of virginity and innocent life taken by Hades.
