The Wife's Resentment by Delarivier Manley

The Wife’s Resentment is a gruesome story written by Delarivier Manley, and it revolves around the ideas of female identity, criminality, sexuality, and others associated with the 18th century. Basically, the author uses the right combination of strong counter-arguments to spread important messages to the audience. Violenta is the main character of this book, and Manley introduced her to examine the loss of power and lack of options for women at that time period.

This is when women were faced with the unforgivingly patriarchal society that kept punishing them for trying to get rid of societal dictates. Voilenta avoids the paragon of her feminine virtue and turns to different violent measures, and her character is portrayed as the one overwhelmed by fatal consequences and the flawed social systems in a talented manner. The author clearly accepts the ideas of feminine passivity and women’s defenseless positions.

However, her book is not about debates against repressive societal standards and rules set for women in the 19th century. Her well-known novel uses a more subtle approach and highlights the contradictory foundation of the society and its concepts of female sexuality and femininity. The plot presents the audience with the society with quite strict regulations of sexual chastity and femininity. It also traces the logical consequences of implementing and believing in arbitrary societal structures that seem quite illogical and contrary.

Manley succeeds to create the heroines who are driven to quite extreme and violent actions that are considered heroic instead of being repugnant because they are used as their effective defense to balance the value of women. One of the main contradictions addressed by the author in this book is the economics of that time period for women. The author highlights the existing disparity between beliefs that the sexual chastity of women is priceless and the extent to which is was treated as some effective bargaining tool by many people.

In conclusion, Violenta, the main character of this story, reiterates the traditional belief of that time that the value of the life of any woman is directly linked to her virginal status. Many readers will agree that she doesn’t want to make this virtue available for sale, but she is waiting for exchanging it to something secure, such as marriage.
