The Effects of Sin in The Scarlet Letter

Romantic novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne was written in 1850, and is an example of a mature American Romanticism. The novel is full of symbolism.

Almost everything in the novel acts like a symbol: the letter is the main symbol, which is understood by all characters in different ways, also there all kinds of natural symbols, other things, and buildings (scaffold, prison, etc.), also some of the characters act as symbols.

What is the meaning of the letter A on Hester’s dress? The letter as a sign adorning Hesper’s dress appears on the first pages of the novel. According to the Puritan’s opinion, Hester is a woman who lacks value and a Babylonian whore, so the letter A on her clothes as takes the first meaning of Adulteress.

On the first pages, the letter was a sign of dishonor and sin. Her strongest characteristics are still in the process of conception, and have not showed themselves completely, so Hester doesn't feel completely free of attacks from the people, even though she has decided to rebel by artfully cutting the sign of her sin in the form of A with a golden thread. For Hester A is only a recall of her adultery and, moreover, it seems that she has found the secret vision – now she sees not only obvious, but also the secret sin in the hearts of those who passes by her.

However, the main character by her nature was not destined to remain only a symbol of sin, because from the very first pages of the novel Hester Prynne manifests herself as a vivid and complex personality. This is revealed at the time when the heroine, intentionally not hiding her sin, trims the scarlet with letter gold embroidery. Rich red color is also symbolical here. Ordinary people of Boston see future sufferings of a sinned parishioner in this color. They think that a sign of the red-hot is scorched in the furnace of hell, but for Hester red color represents not only a torture, but also a passionate love.

From the very beginning Hester tacitly opposes Puritan society, but, in spite of the apparent discrepancy and internal rebellion she wins this musty philistine life with her good attitude towards the people who despise her. Hester is a talented needlewoman and gradually her embroidery became fashionable.

Hester Prynne gradually wins with her labor and talent, so most gloomy parishioners are irresolute to treat the letter in the sense of adulteress and start decrypting it as the development of Hester’s new characteristic – able.
